Bayahibe, known as the primary departure point for excursions to the picturesque Saona Island, attracts over one million tourists annually—a remarkable 18% of all tourist attractions in the Dominican Republic. To ensure safety and sustainability in this highly visited region, government authorities, private enterprises, and other stakeholders have agreed on significant steps.
Collaboration Between Authorities and the Private Sector
The Ministry of Tourism, the Dominican Navy, the National Environmental Protection Service (Senpa), the Directorate of Tourism Police (Politur), the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD), the Prosecutor’s Office, and representatives from the Hotel and Tourism Association (Asonahores) have joined forces with Bayahibe tour operators to implement concrete measures. These initiatives aim to protect the environment, improve the organization of tourism and maritime activities, and enhance visitor safety.
Environmental and Safety Measures
A dedicated working group has been established to ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards in the region. This team will focus on reorganizing coastal areas, preserving the natural resources along the coastline, and promoting sustainable development in the area.
One key initiative is enforcing the prohibition of ship repairs and painting within the 60-meter zone from the high tide line, as stipulated by Laws 305-68 and 64-00. This measure aims to minimize environmental damage caused by maritime operations.
Strengthened Oversight of Permits
The collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), the Ministry of the Environment (MIMARENA), and the Dominican Navy will be intensified to ensure that all tourism and maritime activities are properly authorized and monitored. This includes the regulation of excursions to Saona Island.
A Sustainable Future for Bayahibe
The participating institutions and businesses have pledged to implement measures that ensure environmental protection and promote sustainable tourism. These efforts aim to maintain Bayahibe as an attractive destination that meets the expectations of tourists while addressing ecological challenges.
Positive Impact on the Real Estate Sector

The enhanced safety and environmental protection measures in Bayahibe not only boost its appeal to tourists but also increase investor confidence in the region’s real estate sector. A well-organized and secure environment drives demand for properties, leading to value appreciation for existing assets and new investment opportunities. This highlights the importance of sustainable development in ensuring the economic prosperity of the area.
