In the heart of the picturesque fishing village of Bayahibe, on a small peninsula stretching into the Caribbean Sea, stands one of the region’s most important spiritual and historical landmarks: the Iglesia Católica Divina Pastora. In 2025, this charming church will celebrate its 100th anniversary – a major milestone for the local community and the entire region.

A Church Full of History
The Iglesia Divina Pastora was inaugurated on March 19, 1925.It is dedicated to the patron saint "La Divina Pastora", who is revered as the gentle protector of the faithful. The church was built with the support of the then-Archbishop Adolfo Alejandro Nouel, at a time when Bayahibe was still a small, isolated fishing village.
Architecturally, the church reflects the simplicity and charm of Caribbean village churches:
A wooden structure with a lovingly designed yet simple altar
A distinctive red roof harmonizing beautifully with the tropical surroundings
Today, the Iglesia Divina Pastora is not just a place of worship but also a symbol of Bayahibe’s enduring cultural identity.
A Location Full of History – From the Tainos to Today
The church is located on a small peninsula known as “La Punta”, which extends into the Caribbean Sea.This spot is not only spiritually significant but also historically important:
Even before the arrival of Europeans, Bayahibe was inhabited by the Tainos, the indigenous people of Hispaniola.
Archaeological finds in the area confirm that descendants of the Tainos lived here, maintaining close ties to the sea and nature.
This special location gives the Iglesia Divina Pastora an almost mystical aura – it unites the spiritual roots of the indigenous peoples with the Catholic faith introduced during the colonial era.
100 Years of Faith, Community, and Culture
In 2025, Bayahibe will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its beloved church. The festivities are expected to include:
Special religious services and processions in honor of La Divina Pastora
Musical and cultural performances by the community
Historical exhibitions about the development of Bayahibe and its church
The anniversary will not only be a religious celebration – it will also be a tribute to the history, culture, and unbreakable spirit of Bayahibe’s community.
A Symbol of Hope
Just a few steps from the church grows the famous Bayahibe Rose (Pereskia quisqueyana), a rare and endemic plant species found only in this region.Much like the rose, the Iglesia Divina Pastora symbolizes the resilience and beauty of a community that has preserved its faith and traditions through the tides of change.
